Symbolism in This Rosary
We've had this Padre Pio center for a while, and it took some thinking to tie it all together into something both beautiful and symbolic for this mystical and miraculous saint.
Bloodstone, also called heliotrope, has a long history of ornamental use, dating back at least to the Babylonians, even if the legend goes that it was formed when Christ’s blood fell on the rocks below the cross. It is a form of chalcedony with red inclusions, and was used in the Middle Ages in sculptures depicting martyrdom.
Quartz is very likely the stone referred to as “crystal” in the Bible. It was prized for its transparent quality and was used to make both gems and lenses. Both Old and New Testaments use it in metaphors to describe things as shining, clear, and smooth. Even in Biblical times it was a common mineral, and it is often used when describing expansive things, like the firmament or the sea. Citrine is its yellow variety, and we chose it in this form for it's wound-like character.
Padre Pio was known to have close contact with Jesus and Mary throughout his life on Earth. A Capuchin priest and a stigmatic, he performed many miracles both during his earthly life and after, including healing, bilocation, and knowledge of people's hearts and sins before having met them.
